About Child and Family Services

Family services (FS) can be either a government or a non-profit organization developed to improve the well being of people who come from difficult situations. In general, a department of family services tends to people with no stable homes or jobs, and have no place to go. More specifically child and family services take care of children who have been abused or neglected, or that live in poor and dangerous conditions. These children are usually placed in foster care in a private home or with state certified caregiver. This arrangement is meant to be temporary, until the child is reunited with their biological parents, or is adopted by another family member, by the foster parent, by a teacher or a coach, or if none of those are available, by a stranger.

Family services may be mandated by the law in domestic violence cases where there is in the home abuse or neglect in the home, constant negativity among family members which could lead to violent behavior, and physical and emotional abuse. An FS agency can also work towards domestic violence prevention, via public campaigns and family counseling. Another area of concern is that of special education. This is the education of students with special needs, such as challenges with learning, communication challenges, emotional and behavioral disorders, physical disabilities, and developmental disorders. FS agencies may also run housing programs. Housing for low income is a necessity for families who have lost their homes due to a natural disaster or financial strain.

Employee assistance programs are a form of job and family services, offered by many employers to employees who are going through personal problems that might have a negative impact on their work performance, health, and well-being. These programs usually deal with substance abuse, safe working environment, emotional distress, major life events (births, accidents and deaths), health care concerns, financial or legal concerns, family or personal relationship issues, work relationship issues, concerns about aging parents and more. These programs may result in benefits like decreased medical costs, reduced turnover and absenteeism, and higher productivity

The professionals who handle these types of situations are known as social workers. A social worker must be able to relate well to different kinds of individuals, for instance young offenders, people with mental health conditions, school non-attenders, drug and alcohol abusers, people with learning and physical disabilities and the elderly. A Bachelor of Social Work (BSW) degree is the minimum requisite to become a social worker. However, individuals with psychology, sociology and education degrees may be able to find entry-level jobs in social work. Finally, social workers may specialize in different positions, like medical and public health social workers; child, family and school social workers and mental health and substance abuse social workers.
